Wow!
What a start into the New Year. Boom! I like a good start. Fresh, inspirational, powerful and full of faith.

After I missed all the shows last summer because of our road trip and ‘only’ did CIFF KIDS last winter because of the baby, I decided to go 300% this season.

Starting with Pitti Bimbo in Florence {my first time}, 5 days later I was off to Playtime Paris and after a very quick pit stop at home I went to CIFF KIDS.

Intense yet very awesome. Meeting old friends, connecting with new. Catching up with brands, shop owners, agencies and, of course, other bloggers and journalists. Many very interesting conversations happened and for the first time I realized that Paul & Paula is really old. Haha! We are turning 7 this year in May.

[read more=”Read more” less=”Read less”]

This is so cool. I mean, I love what I do. Kids fashion is still a huge passion, the industry is so nice – really like a family and after all these years… you just know a lot of people, stories and ‘things’.
I also realized that I react the same when people call me Paula during these shows. It actually makes me smile.
So what happened in January?
Pitti was overwhelming. In a positive way. Especially because it was the first time {next time I know my way already}. And really very special. Nobody celebrates kids fashion as the Italians. It was fantastic to see how important the kids business was for these 3 days.
I saw fashion shows {first row}, was invited to very fancy showrooms and booths and did my very first Live Interview.
Diners with friends and lots of laughter…
A beautiful experience!
Next stop was Paris. This time I took Romy with me, my eldest and made lots of ‘dates’ beforehand. Paris is always all about meeting people – everyone is coming, time is short, the fair is big. One needs to arrange things before. On Friday afternoon we met or a quick lunch and coffee, squeezed a little shopping in and met another good friend for diner.
Off to the fair. Talking. Looking. Meeting. Diner with the sweetest people. And Romy surprised that ‘everyone’ knows me. Ha. S E V E N years. Just kidding.
Romy selected two brands. And we went back there a few times. She really loves their style. It was so fun to see and what better than a child who loves your style?!
Back home. One day. Last preps for CIFF KIDS. We did a lovely collab this year. Goodie bag selection, press tour and a TALK. Yes another live thing. Wah. Blog/Influencer relations. Many people showed up. So thankful. Thank you for coming and listening. Important and interesting topic. We as well as CIFF got great feedback. Yay!
And now it is February and the task to follow up with everyone, digest all the news and finds is not as easy as it sounds.
I box with all the cards is sitting next to my computer. Waiting!

During the travels I did not share much on my private IG account. I actually just about managed to keep my new ‘blog only’ IG running. Respect to everyone who managed. Walking around, meeting people, pictures, talking…. and running IG. I am out. I learned that I can’t. Always good to know ones capacity :)

Summary of show recaps:

Pitti Bimbo onetwothree
Playtime via Instagram
Oh and for the trends.
*Next winter we will see balloons. Balloon skirts especially. I love that shape. It is so cute and fun!
*And a little more glamour. A little silver lining here, sequins there… details are the most important. I saw some very fancy {BLING!} shoes my friends.
*And knits. More and more knitwear brands are starting. You know I love knits. This makes me happy.
PLUS:
*I see adult collections popping up. More and more brands add pieces for parents. The “I would wear this” phrases must have made an impression…
*Bedding – brands love to have a little home wear too.
*Accessories. Brands are more complete. Socks, underwear, shoes… before you had a brand {or two} for each category. Now you find these pieces in every collection.
PS: In case you wonder – I missed my family big times. It is wonderful to get out {the first time I traveled alone since Josephine was born was Florence} and to not count the kids permanently… {one, two, three… four. Bingo. All there!}. It is. I do miss them. I looked at the pictures on my phone and we face timed lots too.
You know – it is the same when we are all together. The craziness that comes with a family of six is just what you love and hate most. At the same time!
Thank you to everyone I met. Everyone I talked too. Everyone that listened and shared. LOVE!

The best of Paul & Paula 2016

family breakfast

Two more days and 2016 is over. Already!

During our flight to Athens (where we arrived this Wednesday) I was thinking that it could be really fun to do a little round up here on the blog.

Feature the best/ most read posts for example. I mean, I was really curious to investigate as well. Which topics do you guys love? What are you interested in etc…

And it is a lovely way to finish the year and take a little break from the blog and social media. Refreshing actually.
[read more=”Read more” less=”Read less”]

Let’s start:

The TOP FIVE posts on Paul & Paula in 2016, in order:

1. Willieandmillie. These fun kids room accessories from Sweden!

2. The Animals Observatory. In January I introduced you to this new brand and their very first collection.

Briar Handmade

3. Briar. The cutest baby&toddler bonnets around.

4. The 2016 round up of Advent Calendars. You probably do not need one right now, but maybe want to bookmark this post for future references.

5. Bloomingville Mini – the kids collection from one of our favourite interior brands.

The TOP FIVE Instagram pictures in 2016:

1. Camping! In our bedroom. I nearly did not post this. I nearly did not even take this picture. It was fun to see all the like and comments.

2. The world’s smallest restaurant.

3. Not the kids room. Not the playroom. But our kitchen received many likes.

4. Antoine portrayed by Romy.

5. Our Christmas tree on the way home.

family breakfast

Our weekly series of family breakfasts is very popular as well. Every Saturday.

And we started something new. Every Monday I will take a picture of all four (YES a challenge) kids. For fun and to see them grow and change… I am sure it will be cool to compare the first picture with the last of the year 2017. Please join – they grow up so quickly!

EMP museum

And our road trip of course. Oh man… the best thing ever and we still feel the energy and sunshine!

And personal in 2016?

*I quit sugar! (big step and good step, Christmas time saw some exceptions… but good ones)

*I started to run! (still not the biggest fan buuuuuut I feel that I need it. This is good and does good.)

*Both things make me proud. Proud that I am able to stay strong. And I feel great. Best base for a mum and business owner.

*I decided to go for it. To grow Paul & Paula. Something I wanted to do for a long time and always hesitated. During our big trip I decided to just go for it. (you see what such a break can do to you)

And what is in it for 2017?

I will share a few little things that will make you want more:

*Our newsletter will get an exciting and exclusive feature. As of 2017 every newsletter will come with an inspiring interview. Small business owners will share their best tips, tricks and some -new – private stuff.

*Make sure you are on the list because you do not want to miss out!

*To celebrate the New Year we will host a fantastic give away in partnership with STOKKE! Oh yes… you must, again, make sure to follow us on this one.

*I also mentioned that Paul & Paula will see some changes. And that is still true. I am working on it. For some time and things take different directions sometimes. Need a little more time. But: The consulting part that I already offer will grow. Will be more professional and will take more of my time. I love it. I love to work with brands, shops and other people from the kids industry and help them grow.

What was your most memorable moment in 2016?

Christmas at Kew – A Feast of Lights

Christmas at Kew

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go …but the prettiest sight to see is the holly that will be, on your own front door”

When the voice of Bing Crosby fills our home, we know its time for Christmas. Time for our silver reindeer to adorn our mantel piece, the Christmas lights to dazzle our tree, and Santa, the wizards and every little ornament come out of its box ready to be celebrated. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and my favorite holiday.

This year we’re staying in London and experiencing a snuggly Christmas. I wonder if we will indeed get a white Christmas. It has been so cold this winter that I wouldn’t be surprised if we did. Little M would be thrilled if we woke to snow on Christmas morn.

[read more=”Read more” less=”Read less”]

We’re ready with her gifts, a few, but meaningful ones, which she will hopefully love and play with for a long time to come. She’s still small, and doesn’t really understand the whole Santa visiting story yet, but LOVES “Santa”….from afar!

Christmas at Kew Christmas at Kew Christmas at Kew

This past weekend, and to rev up the Christmas spirit inside us, we decided to go on the Christmas at Kew Trail, a walk into a winter wonderland of lights, lights and more lights. It is beautiful, and if all that Christmas-ness doesn’t get you into a holiday mood, I don’t know what will.

Every year, around this time, London’s famous Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew is transformed into a magical world – a world where lit up trees sing Christmas carols, a carousel rides with an 80 yr old, and an 8 year old side by side. It’s a place where giant baubles adorn symmetrical trees, exaggerated candles that seem to touch the sky, and the beauty of light against darkness play with your mind and take you to a place so happy.

The trail is approximately one mile, with lots of people, families, adults in colorful Christmas hats, people sporting their best (or worst!) Christmas jumpers. Apart from the sights, there’s lots of yummies in the food corner, sausages, hog roast, hot dogs and more. Of course, we cant forget the mulled wine, a glass of which warmed my insides, and made for an even happier walk.

Christmas at Kew Christmas at Kew

We especially loved the installation called ‘The Hive’, a stunning recreation of an actual beehive. It is beautiful, and by far the highlight of the visit for me. It is created to tell the story of the honey bee and the role of pollination. It is made entirely of aluminum (which you see up close), but from far it’s like a surreal
structure, that I found myself being drawn to.

Little M seemed to take in everything, and was especially enamored by the giant baubles, and of course Santa! It’s a lovely outing for the family, and unless your little ones are sick during this time, it’s great to get them out and on an adventure!

We ended with a piping Hot Chocolate, and a crisp warm sausage roll and some time to wander about the beautiful gift shop to warm our little one before we got her home.

She walked home with a little sparkly wand in her hand….ready to spread the magic of 2017 to everyone she saw.

2016 has been special. We watched Little M grow, and bring so much love and laughter to our lives. We also watched as the world around us changed, and made some decisions that bring uncertainty and wonder about our tolerance for each other’s background and culture.

We also moved house this year, and are settling in well into what is now our “home”. We travelled to beautiful places with the best company. And now, we can’t wait for more….

May the remainder of your 2016 be special.

May your Christmas be warm, white, and surrounded by love. ❤

2017 begin with a blast (or lots of sleep)….

Let the new year rejuvenate us all to be a better ‘US’ in a better world.

Today I’m humming: *Mele Kalikimaka* by Bing Crosby

{Mele Kalikimaka is a Hawaiian Christmas greeting, and this version is a song we often woke up to on Dad’s record player as kids when Christmas was approaching.}

Thank you Saroj! What a wonderful post to send you all, my dear readers, off into a wonderful Christmas break. With your loved ones. Hug them all the time and stay cosy!

Paul & Paula will take a little break and travel to Athens next week. You can surely find us on Instagram here and there…

Kodomo Boston – Q&A with owner Jasmine Punzalan

Kodomo Boston

Our Boston based contributor Surabhi went to Kodomo Boston – a wonderful kids shop – for a great interview. Let’s see what Surabhi found out:

Kodomo Boston is a premier children’s clothing store that opened in Boston this past summer.

We had a little chat with the amazing owner Jasmine Punzalan about the store and what makes it so special and unique.

[read more=”Read more” less=”Read less”]
1) Tell us about Kodomo Boston. What inspired the name Kodomo and what sets the store apart?
Kodomo – the Japanese word for “child” – is a thoughtful children’s boutique that carries brands focused not only on style but on ethical business practices. The store is located in the historic South End neighborhood of Boston. Our products are sustainably produced, inspired by the need to live a more mindful existence.

2) What has been your most positive and fulfilling experience since you opened the store this past August?
There have been a lot of wonderful experiences since the store officially opened. I have enjoyed getting to know the neighborhood and making friends with other small business owners in the South End. Interacting with a variety of customers is always fun, too. And of course building a solid team with Marina and Gretchen, our store managers, has lead us to becoming good friends.

Kodomo Boston Kodomo Boston

3) Is there anything you wish you knew before entering the retail world?
That social media can be a full time job! Ha!!

4) Besides their ethics and best practices, what is your criteria for selecting the brands you stock? Can you name some of the more popular brands at Kodomo?
We pride ourselves in working with independent designers who make stylish clothes. We select clothes that are not stereotypical and styles that I would appreciate wearing myself. Mini Rodini and Nununu are amongst some of the more popular brands at Kodomo.

5) Owning a business is obviously very demanding. How do you find the time to relax and in what ways do you integrate yoga into your daily routines?
Yoga is my priority, everyday. I keep my mats and props at the office and try my best to integrate yoga into my day. Whether it’s 5 minutes or 2 hours, whatever works. It really keeps me going and helps me focus. I am undertaking Iyengar yoga teacher training, which keeps me away for a weekend each month, but we plan everything around it so the store is not affected.

Kodomo Boston Kodomo Boston

6) As an entrepreneur and mom of two boys, what advice would you share with mothers who also wish to be mindful in their everyday lives while being an inspiration to their children?
Take one thing at a time. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Being a small business owner means you work seven days a week. Some days you’re not able to put your kids to bed but then you’ll take time off when you can and be able to make the most of the moment in you’re in. It’s exhausting but also rewarding and exciting at the same time.

7) Kodomo Boston is known for giving back to the community/specific foundations when they can. Are there any upcoming events or projects people should know about in relation to this?
We plan an event every month. In September we officially launched the brand AKID in Boston exclusively at Kodomo. This event was to celebrate an incredibly generous donation of 500 pairs of shoes, made by AKID, to Boston’s Home for Little Wanderers. They are a local non-profit providing services and programs for child and family development. In October, in honor of breast cancer awareness, we donated 10% of our total monthly sales to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

And more recently, we are still working out the details, but we are really excited about a Bobo Choses & Kodomo event in April!

Kodomo Boston

8) What are your favorite gift items/recommendations at the store for the upcoming holidays?
Our customers are loving the Mini Rodini reindeer collection, Mama Couture Dolls, and Tutu Du Monde tutus.

Thank you for this great and inspiring interview Surabhi!

Lyon with kids – the best things to do

LYON with kids

For the school Autumn break we went to France. We have never been to Lyon before but talked about it many times. It is the 2nd city in France {I have the feeling many people do not know this fact} and has a very large food culture. Let’s go!

We went from Saturday to Saturday and I will show you what we did. Lyon with kids here we go:
[read more=”Read more” less=”Read less”]
LYON with kids
Day one:

On the first day at destination we usually try to do some relaxing things. We do not hit the city and drag the kids from shop to shop.
We had a nice breakfast and went to Parc de la tete d’Or which was just around 10 walking minutes from our apartment. It is a huge park with a lake, a zoo {free entry}, botanical garden and even a little Kermis.

{There are not many other parks in Lyon and we knew we wanted to be close to this one when searching for an apartment. Keep this in mind if you plan on going here.}

In the parc we were also surprised by the famous Theatre de Guignol. It’s a puppet theater and it was on our to-do-list. The weather was ok and we attended a 25 min. show.

On our way back we did some grocery shopping {you gotta love French supermarkets} and picked up some little treats from Les Halles de Lyon-Paul Bocuse – an indoor food market with the best of sweets, bread, fish, meat and and and… a feast! And a great place to go with kids. There is so much to see and to choose from.

LYON with kids
LYON with kids
LYON with kids
Day two:

We met a friend and went in to the city center. Had lunch and got a little tour of the heart of Lyon called Presqu’île {French for Peninsula}. It was a beautiful day and we loved to stroll through the little streets. Did some stops at bookstores to add to our French collection and a did a longer stop on Place Bellecour. One of the biggest squares in Europe. There is a nice playground on the square.

LYON with kids
LYON with kids
Day three:

We took the bus and went to La Croix-Rousse – a neighborhood set on a hill. Getting up there was already a fun experience – either you take the stairs {not recommended with a stroller} or you walk and walk and walk…

It is a beautiful corner of Lyon. Very old with lots of restaurants, cafes and small shops. First thing we did was to check out Les Fresques de Lyon. {see my IG posts too – here and here – to get a better idea} So very cool and H U G E!

After that we had a pick-nick and then we went on to find Les Traboules de la Croix-Rousse. Lyon is famous for their Traboules – a kind of passageway between buildings. In Lyon, they were originally used by silk manufacturers and other merchants to transport their products. The ones in Croix-Rousses are actually indicated and you can follow the route by finding Lion signs. The kids were so excited and we, Eric & I, could hardly keep up…
It is not super easy to follow those narrow and dark passageways with a baby in a stroller but we managed and it was super fun!

LYON with kids
LYON with kids
Day four:

We went up again! This time to The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière! There is a little cable car taking you up the hill which was already good fun for the kids.

And then you have a great view over the city. We had a look to find the places we have already been and checked if we could find something else that looked like a great place to discover.

After that we went back into the city center, little stop at the Bellecourt playground {it was very sunny and warm that day} and did a little {French} shopping at Petit Bateau, Monoprix, FNAC etc…

LYON with kids
LYON with kids

Day five:

More traboules today. This time in Le Vieux Lyon {the old town} – it is one of Europe’s most extensive Renaissance neighborhoods.

This time we needed a little help to find our way. Some were closed because people live in the buildings and do not like too many tourists running through their backyards – understandable. We discovered some very beautiful little yards, very old buildings and were glad that you can find maps of the passageways online – like here.

There are a few areas in Lyon with traboules {many people think they are only in the old part of the city}.

LYON with kids
LYON with kids
Day six:

On Friday we went to a new area called Confluence – at the confluence of the Saone and Rhone rivers in the heart of Lyon.To make Lyon a sustainable, green and smart city they decided to enlarge the city center. Connecting this old, very industrial part of Lyon with the rest of the city center {via public transport and walkable areas}. Making it as green as possible!

We went to Le Musée des Confluences – a science center and anthropology museum which opened at the end of 2014. It is located at the very southern tip of the Presqu’île. If you love architecture – you will need to come here. The museum shops is also very worth a visit!

One week is over. We enjoyed our time in France, felt often like “Little Paris” just without the stress. Enjoyed all the boulangeries and sun. {Sweden treated us with 0 C on Sunday}

It is a beautiful city and especially the old part tells so many stories by just strolling around. It was a bit tricky to find good lunch and afternoon tea spots for our big family because a lot of places are rather small. If you have been to Paris I would definitely recommend to go to Lyon next time you fancy a trip to France.

What do you think? Lyon with kids? YES!
