Space saving storage solutions for tiny children’s rooms

Space saving storage solutions for tiny children's rooms

Tell me, how often were you thinking about moving to a place with more space over the last months? Probably more than once.

But you are still in the same spot? Moving into a bigger home is not always the first solution. Because of friends, the school your child is loving so much, the commute you may have to do again one day, and other factors. They all make you want to look into space-saving solutions instead of moving.

And figuring out lovely and practical storage ideas for your kids’ rooms can be a challenge. The confrontation of making the most of toys and kids stuff can be called a design challenge. That is why I am sharing some space-saving storage solutions for tiny children’s rooms with you today.

You probably did some de-cluttering already during one of the rainy weekends. And that is a great starting point to get the storage situation off the ground. Kids room storage solutions will help you to maximise floor space for play and to give the most beautiful things room to shine.

Here are great as well as practical storage solutions for your kids’ rooms that you can re-create in your own home straight away:

Keep it Simple

The beginning of a good and organised room is a simple layout. Bright, neutral colours will open up any small space and make it more welcoming. Do not overthink and over-design, but make sure it is functional for a child. And what does it really need? Keep storage containers low and easy to access. And give everything a dedicated spot to make it easy to get tidied up.

Shelves

Shelves are excellent for displaying your child’s most beautiful possessions. Be careful: Too many open shelves can make a room feel chaotic. It is better to use some great, coordinating boxes and containers on shelves to unify the look, or use shelves with doors.

Low shelves are easily accessible and great for toys that are played with often. Alternative book storage comes in the form of picture ledges, which are fun to line a little reading nook with.

Here are 8 ideas for children’s bookshelves!

Invest in multifunctional furniture

Every little thing can make a big difference in a small room. And some pieces of furniture can actually do several jobs. A desk can be a bedside table and a stool can include a storage function for example.
A bunk bed is the best space saving thing there is for shared rooms. But, not only. It can also be very useful for small rooms in general. Underneath you can create a desk area or play corner, creating more free space for the rest of the room. Elevated beds with built-in storage are excellent as well.

Great children workspaces

Make the most of the height of the room

All you want in a kids room is to have some floor space so the little ones can play. Remeber the first points about keeping your room simple and investing in multifunctional furniture. Now: We go up!
Put shelves all the way up the wall, there is always something you do not need every day and can be stored on the top.
However, keep things simple here as well. And do not overload your shelves or the room will look cramped and unorganised, not something your child will feel inspired in.

Dual utility

Window seats perfectly utilise the small space underneath a window and offer seating. Now how about combing that with some storage space? A wall-to-wall window seat doubles as an easy-access bookshelf and is looking neat.

Baskets, boxes & co

Woven baskets can be a great way to keep a variety of toys or books in order. They also look fabulous and add texture and warmth to a room. Alternatively, there is often room for a toy box or trunk at the end of the bed and could be used as a chair or table sometimes as well. And a child-sized clothing rail is a fun way of storing and displaying dress-up items.

Have fun organising!

Children work spaces that are perfect for home school and inspire imagination

Since we are far away from being done with Covid but summer breaks will eventually come to an end I thought it would be great to look a little more into workspaces for children.

Here in the UK, we are planning on sending children back to school in the 2nd week of September. Fingers crossed! However, I know that elsewhere schools will stay shut until next year. And that means doing the work from home and therefore a good space is needed.

Making a designated study space where kids feel comfortable, productive, and can concentrate is key and I will show you some great ideas, share some tips, and give you inspiration for your own four walls.

Welcome to this children workspaces that are perfect for home school and inspire imagination guide:

Creating a desk space

Having a special and comfortable space to study is crucial when you need to concentrate and to focus. And a dedicated desk is way better than working around the kitchen table. Plus this way you can keep all your pencils, erasers, and other school utensils on your desk – ready every time you continue to work. And I am sure your child will love to organise their own space.
Furthermore, a  great feature to have in a desk is adjustable height. Otherwise, you can also have an adjustable chair. That way the years of use are adding up.
I know that space can be an issue, so why not having a desk under a bunk bed or go for a small version with a drawer and the essentials can be kept in there.

I put together some great children’s desk to give you a head start:

kids' desks

1. Flexible desk*! The surface can be set to 3 different levels. I think it is great to be able to change up a little when you need it…

2. Cute desk* that comes in two sizes and a lots of colour options. Simple and cool!

3. Boho rattan desk*.

4. Perfectly combining design and functionality and the two compartments under the top can store everything. This desk* is available in white and celadon and has a groove for pencils on the top.

5. This desk* won the Red Dot Design Award and you can also add some drawers if you wish. (available in green and pink too)

6. Adjustable desk* with storage under the table and a great design. I love the natural version but there is blue and white as well.

7. Vintage style desk* that is available in different colours and has an accompanying chair* too.

8. This is a very stylish desk & chair set* that will look fantastic in any corner of your home.

Personalise the children workspace

Hang their artwork, add some time tables, and/or put a magnetic panel up to stick papers, notes, and drawings. Just make it fun, colourful, and inspiring. Have a look at my coolest art prints for kids’ rooms article to find great posters and more.
Colours are super important because they can turn a room into a great space and really help you to be creative. A room that screams happy and fun is so much better than a boring ‘classroom’ don’t you think?

Organisation

Think about your own desk or office. I am sure you are much more productive when it is clutter-free and tidy. And when you are creating a healthy learning environment for your kids it should be orderly as well.
Take a bookshelf and fill it with school books, paper, and art supplies. Provide little baskets for pens, glue sticks, scissors, etc. That way you will avoid a busy desk and leaving more space to do the work.

Don’t forget for the perfect children workspace:
You will need a bin, stock up on supplies, and keep healthy snacks in the pantry!

18 things for a better stay-at-home May!

18 things for a better stay-at-home May!

Technically I am late. Because I am usually sharing my monthly list the last Friday of the month. But since things are just a bit different right now (and I actually totally did not notice that tomorrow is the 1st of May until right now), the first of May is just as good. Yes?!

And last April definitely was very different from any other April and I think I never wrote that little here on Paul & Paula. Admitting that I never thought that having the kids home and doing the whole school thing would be that time consuming. The days fly by and boom, it is 8pm and all I want to do is hang on my couch.

What drives me, and keeps my going, is running. And I added a lot of km to my weeks these days!

How are you doing at the moment? I actually wrote on our kitchen calendar, usually decorated in many colours and handwritings, SAME SAME SAME in bold letters all over the week. And that is how I feel mostly: Same. Every day is the same. Therefore we want to make it a bit more fun, inspiring, and fresh with this new list today.

And of course, I added some things that will make the current situation more bearable. Enjoy:

Vintage home with colourful accents

Vintage home with colourful accents

After last weeks stint to London, we are back in Scandinavia. In Stockholm to be precise. And this cool Vintage home with colourful accents will inspire you for sure.

We are in a part called Tellusborg which is part of the Midsommarkransen area. You could translate this as Midsummer’s wreath which sounds utterly romantic don’t you think?

And the apartment reflects the part of town very well. It is a very charming and vibrant area with a nice mix of buildings from different decades. The environment is creative and dynamic with a large selection of unique design and vintage shops. Further you can find many restaurants, small cafes, and the beautiful Svandammsparken.

Let’s have a tour:

A colourful dream family home in Australia

A colourful dream family home in Australia
Bonjour, how are you? I am working on a bigger ‘thing’ that I am hoping to launch by the end of this year. And that is why I sometimes take a day off from blogging. Like yesterday. First I wanted to start writing but could not decide about what…

So I turned to my project and decided to use the ‘article writing time’ there instead. I know it all sounds a bit ‘maaaahhh’, but trust me – it will be fun, useful, and awesometastic. (my latest favourite word that I just use all the time, especially with the kids… and if not that, it is fantastico… don’t ask!)

But today we will not skip Interior Tuesday. And we will not visit Scandinavia but travel all around the world. To Australia, the Bellarine Peninsula, off Australia’s Victorian Coast to be very precise.

Hayley Pannekoecke and husband James built and designed the home of their dreams here. Hayley is the co-founder of Kip&Co  and, of course, it is as colourful as you would imagine. The couple is sharing this enchanting home with their children Chloe, Faye, and Floyd.

Let’s have a closer look and discover some unexpected colour pairings, one crazy attic loft, an outdoor pool, and beautiful oak parquetry floors:

Loving this big family kitchen and I would love to cook in here. That giant skylight is such a great idea…

And there is more: A cool velvet sofa, lots of concrete, teal walls, and fun kids paintings that make the perfect decoration!

And then there is this pink room! Fresh, with an en-suite, and some cool accessories!

The bunk bed room. I guess that when you have a lot of space you just build a huge bunk bed that serves sleepovers and slumber parties. Or family visits and the possibility to change beds every other night…

And then this. The white loft. It is somehow funny and definitely unexpected. All the way up in the attic – a blank space.

In the mood for more Australia? How about these 5 rooms or 2 contemporary kids rooms?
