Best books for kids – by Kenny Friedman

best kids books

Kenny lives in Chicago and writes on smonk you.
He has a son and makes sure that Twitter is a fun place… or one to go to when you need a little break from all the “important” stuff.

Here are the 5 favourite books Kenny chose:

1: An Awesome Book by Dallas Clayton
It’s such a wonderful book about dreams… I remember the first time I read it to Miloh when he was about two. I teared up a little. I think there’s greatness in there for kids and adults. It’s still one of his favorite books.
Also: There is a photo of Dallas Clayton, the author, on the back. Miloh says he’s his friend. Also it used to be when you bought one he gave one to a kid or library that needed books. But I’m not sure that’s true anymore.

2: Dr. Seuss’s Sleep Book by Dr. Seuss
I like it because it puts Miloh to sleep. He likes it because of the bug that starts it all. Miloh has divided the book into three sections. The yawn part, the sport part and the sleep part. He sometimes only wants to read one part.

3: Life-Size Zoo
It’s a fantastic book because it is a series of photos of animals at their actual size… Sometimes you see a whole animal, like the hedgehog, other times you see a little more than an eye, like the elephant. It has great info in it. And Miloh loves learning about the animals especially the red panda.

4: The Sneetches and Other Stories by Dr Seuss
Miloh likes this because he loves the part where the sneetches keep going in and out of the machines. I like it because I’m really anti-hate and this is a good book to teach kids to not to stereotype different types of people. Plus in the story Too Many Daves that’s in the book there is the name Oliver Boliver Butt and really that’s a fantastic name.

5: Q&A a Day for Kids
This is more of a question and answer book than a story or such. But what I love is you ask your child a question a day. Then do the same on two different years. We’re just a few months in so it’s year one but it will be awesome to see how Miloh’s answers change as he gets older.

Best books for kids – by Melissa Wang

best kids books
Melissa is the brainchild behind Eden & Zoe and these two girls are the ones she is reading these books to. Eden (6 years), Zoe (4 years) and Melissa live in San Francisco/US.

Melissa is such a warmhearted person and I am always looking forward to see her next steps with her young label!

1) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – Roald Dahl

– We absolutely love reading Roald Dahl’s stories – they are so entertaining and hilarious. We also love Quentin Blake’s illustrations.

– This is Eden’s favorite book – she says “I loves all the different kinds of candies and the Oompa Loompas are really funny”.

– We went to see the musical in London last summer which was fantastic.

2) I will Never Not Ever Eat A Tomato (Charlie & Lola) – Lauren Child

– We also enjoy the Charlie and Lola books. Lola reminds me so much of Zoe! I have read the books so many times. We also watch the cartoons, which are great.

– This is Zoe’s favorite book – she says “I like Lola. She is cute. I also don’t like tomatoes!”

3) Madeleine and the Bad Hat – Ludwig Bemelmans

– The Madeleine series is wonderful with amazing illustrations – especially of Paris! The stories are humorous and Madeleine is a girl with her own mind (not too unlike my girls!).

– Both Eden and Zoe like this book – Zoe says “The Bad Hat is like a boy in my class! I always run away from boys!”

4) Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity – Mo Willems

– We completely identify with the Knuffle Bunny books because Eden has her own toy cat which she feels the same way about. She can’t sleep without her cat and it goes everywhere with us (it is an extremely well-traveled cat!)

– Eden says “No one has the same cat as me! Yay!”

5) Tiddler The Story Telling Fish – Julia Donaldson

– We also love books by Julia Donalson – including The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, Highway Rat etc.

– Eden and Zoe both love Tiddler, the story telling fish and his adventures. It was a great way for them to learn about creatures in the ocean and a very charming story.

– Favorite catchphrase: “Tiddler? Tiddler? Tiddler’s late!”. You don’t know how many times this has been said around the house!

Best books for kids – by Jimena Bruguera

best kids books
Jimena is from Argentina but lives in Brooklyn, NY now. She founded HBB Industria Argentina {check here} and has one daughter, Helena.

I am looking forward meeting her during our trip to NY this summer because I need to meet and find out more from such an inspiring lady!

1. La Bruja Winnie, Korky Paul y Valerie Thomas
Helena: “I like it because Winnie’s house is all black so she keeps tripping with her cat and that’s funny but the cat only wants to be black, he doesn’t like to change”

2. My DAD is BIG and STRONG BUT… a bed time story, Caroline Saudo
Helena: “I like this book because the little boy is the one putting the Dad to sleep and the Dad doesn’t want to go to sleep, and he is big!”

3. The Moustachapillar, Jonty Lees
Helena: “The caterpillar becomes his moustache, that is so funny! and they become friends and they eat a lot of cake!”

4. Moon Rabbit, Nathalie Russell
Helena: “I like that she leaves home and then comes back! And also that the little rabbit finds a new friend and that is beautiful!”

5. A bit lost, Chris Haughton
Helena: “This one is very funny! the owl keeps falling from the tree when she falls asleep, I think because she is very little …and also she is sooo funny when she describes her mom to her friend that keeps bringing other animals!”

Best books for kids – by Daniela M.

best kids books

Daniela is a very good friend of mine. She lives in Lisbon, Portugal and is mum of on very cute little lady. She runs the webshop Loja Dada and is always full of great ideas and advice.

Lets see her 5 books:

1. Charlie and Lola: Slightly Invisible +  2. Charlie and Lola: I Am Not Sleepy and I Will Not Go to Bed
We just love all Charlie & Lola books!

3. When I Was Born
…this is a nice portuguese one, translated into english. i love to buy books from planeta tangerina, because they have a different approach, the stories are more day-to-day stories and the illustrations are great and show other color schemes and drawings than the “regular” books.

4. Borka: The Adventures Of A Goose With No Feathers
When i was small, i used to love this one. So i wanted to include it because i bought it for M. and i hope she will like it as much as I did. But i bought it in German and she doesn’t want me to read German books to her!

5. Look Inside: Your Body
Right now, she needs to know everything about the human body and I think she knows more than me already.

Best books for kids – by Nomita Vaish-Taylor

best kids books
Nomita lives in the Uk but is originally from India. She is a mum to one sweet daughter and runs the lovely kids blog ebabee likes.

I met Nomita once at the Playtime fair and she is as darling as her blog!

1. Ramayana by Sanjay Patel

Imagine a mystical land where 10 headed demons exist, where monkeys have super-
powers, where princes are not blue-blooded but blue skinned and where evil lurks around every corner but good will always triumph. Ramayana is based on Hindu mythology but is a book that anyone can relate to and both Anya (5 years) and I love it for so many reasons. It’s not just the captivating story but all the stunning illustrations that really bring the book to life. It’s a book that grows with you and can be appreciated by any age.

2. The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt

Quirky, different and great fun! The drawings are vibrant and the story is very imaginative. Anya loved the book from the first time I read it to her and asks for it repeatedly.

3. A Long Piece of String by William Wondriska

An oldie but a real goodie. This is an alphabet book and if you buy just one alphabet book for your child, then let this be it. First published in 1963, this book is now back and it’s quite stunning in its simplicity. Our favourite alphabet book by far!

4. I want my Hat back by Jon Klassen

Funny, witty and has a wicked little twist at the end. The story is told in a few words accompanied by beautiful illustrations and centres around the premise that kids do naughty things and then try to cover it up with lies. I absolutely love this clever kids book.

5. Supereditions

This is the only book in my list that I haven’t yet got but I’m so excited by the idea that I had to share it and I plan to get it soon. This is a series of books in English or French that have the story in words but no illustrations. The idea is that kids can draw their own illustrations on each page according to their imagination. If like me you’ve got a child who loves drawing, then these books look like they’d be great fun and also great to save and look back on years later.
