Hermitage Amsterdam

Some week ends ago my daughter requested to go to a museum.
{I love how kids come up with funny and unexpected ideas}

So we decided to finally visit the Hermitage Amsterdam, a place that was very high on my list for some time already.

The Hermitage museum is located on the banks of Amsterdam’s Amstel river and is the Dutch branch of the world-famous Hermitage in Saint Petersburg (Russia).
It only opened on July 19, 2009 after they entirely renovated this new space, a 17th-century former home for the elderly.
On display at the Hermitage Amsterdam are paintings, graphic works, sculptures and works of applied art, archaeological finds and numismatic material from the collection of the State Hermitage. The Hermitage also has a children’s section and holds regular workshops with the aim of stimulating creativity.

It is a small and very elegant museum. In fact it consists of only four exposition rooms and usually of not many objects, but those which are on show, are always worth seeing, while the way of display is modern and intelligent.And I think it is a perfect size if you take the kids.
There are 2 museum shops and one of them has a huge kids selection which is adorable {free access by the way}

There is a very nice Restaurant in the museum called Neva which is open for lunch and diner (!). Meaning you can access the restaurant without going through the museum and as it is in the heart of Amsterdam I can absolutely recommended it for a little “pit stop”…  and in summer it has a nice, open terrace at the back of the museum.

These are my kids who enjoyed the big square in front of the museum for some running around…

I think it is a must see for everyone visiting and living (!) in Amsterdam, with or without kids…
