Some weeks ago I went to Hamburg for a real nice girls week end.

I have lived in Hamburg for 2 1/2 years and it is, next to Berlin, my favourite city in Germany. I just love the harbor, the water and the nightlife.

I received a few e mails asking if I could recommend some “things to do” with kids and even so during that week end we did everything but kiddie stuff I want to share some tips on what to do with kids in Hamburg. Here we go:

Eat:

Vapiano
Always good! Read my review for Amsterdam here and I have been to a couple in Germany and they are all great too.
Vapiano.

Mama
Mama sounds like a big playroom and coffee being served but it is a nice Italian place that has high chairs, space for buggies, nice food and friendly staff.

Sternchance
In summer or whenever the weather allows there is a really nice play area outside (with a terrace). For all other days there is a playcorner on the cafe as well and the kids menu has some yummy things like hash browns, pancakes and rice pudding.

Frieda am Park
Lots of organic dishes, lovely terrace in the sun and some of the best cakes in Hamburg.
And breakfast… yes, youshould come here for a breakfast. Its devine with all you can wish for…

Prinsessan
Maybe to celebrate something or just because… but here you will find the finest desserts ever… and if you are, like me, a fan of the sweet… you can order a 3 course meal… all desserts :)
They do some very nice Swedish organic plates with cheese and bread as well…

Shopping:

Blutsgeschwister
Situated in one of my favourite parts of Hamburg, Sternschanze (Sternstr. 7/ 20357 Hamburg) you will find lots of Scandi brands like katvig, smafolk, Maileg and Ferm Living.

Oschaetzchen
Every time I am in the city I have to go here, really every time. This shop does not do clothes or toys no they sell lots of fine teas, chocolates and other delicate things to treat yourself and/or your loved ones. Lollipops like flowers, sugar like roses, chocolates packaged like from the museum. I could spend hours here and always bring something back home.

Vergiss mein nicht
Super cute and a real treasure is this shop. Placed in the backyard and stocks cool retro pieces as well as great wooden toys.
{Vergiss mein nicht means forget me not.}

Lys Vintage
Scandinavian design temple which will make you AND the kids happy.

Milchmaedchen
Great selection of stylish deco items for the living or kids room. Have a sneak here…

Sleep:

It is always a bit difficult to give tips for places to stay. Why? It depends whether you prefer a hotel, hostel or an apartment, or maybe a luxury accommodation. What is your budget and how many people are travelling…  mostly I write down places I stayed myself … and you can always drop me a line if you want to know more!
A mix of all is Superbude.

At the moment. ie, I think the Novotel hotels are doing a good job. The hotels are mostly new/ refreshed with nice designs and they have family rooms, actually most of them will not charge you for a second room if you travel with kids and the same goes for food. Breakfast is very nice too.
For Hamburg check here.

Otherwise I personally like SIDE and EAST.

Fun:

Planten un Blomen
One of the most beautiful parks in Hamburg with a large Japanese garden and an unbeatable adventure playground for children, with huge fiberglass mountains, dredging and water games!

In case of rain I would suggest:
Planetarium or Fun Arena,  a Puppet play at  Hoftheater-Ottensen and in the Altonaer Museum, they have a great kids section.
klick! Kindermuseum (kids museum) or the Miniature Wonderland, which is the biggest in Europe.

Of course Hamburg has a Zoo and even so it is super touristic, a boat trip through the harbor is a MUST.

And did you know Hamburg has a city beach? Beaches work all year round! A drink here is another MUST. :)

Have fun and please let me know if you know more great places to do in Hamburg with kids!
