When your child needs glasses

Hi there, especially if you follow me on Instagram you did follow our journey with the glasses.

And because I received quite a few messages and e mails I thought this topic is worth a post, worth sharing our experience.

KleinA has a so called lazy eye, this means that his left eye is not as in control as his right eye. It means as well that his right eye, the “good” one was doing all the work.

Sometimes I was looking at him and saw that his eye was a bit “funny” but whenever I asked somebody they denied or better, did not confirm.

But then we had the 3 years check up which includes an eye test. One eye is covered and he had to see objects. He failed – with the left eye.
We went back a few weeks later – same thing.

Off to the specialist and confirmed. He is young and chances are very good that everything will adjust fine.

He was tired and specially now, thinking back the weeks before this appointment he was really really tired. It was a relief to know whats going on and what to do but I wanted to make sure that he feels good about it. That everyone close encourages him!

The doctor told us that he will need to wear a patch for a couple of hours a day {6h at that time} and that he will get glasses.

The patch is to get the weak eye up and running. Doing the job it should.
The glasses help to keep the eyes straight and the strength is actually very little.

How did that go:

Patch – muuuuch better than we thought. Really. So amazed that he took it so easy and cool. First day of course had to bring out some tricks, second day a bit animated but that was it… by now it is just part of the morning routine. And yes, I really thought it would be more of a battle!
And we are down to 3h/day already… after only 6 weeks the doctor could see a big improvement!
{His skin is very sensitive and those patches are incredibly strong so we got a cream to keep his skin around the eye smooth.}

Glasses – off we went to find some cool glasses. Oh that was not easy {and man kids glasses can be expensive}… but finding a pair that he liked and that are fun was a mission. Lots of super safe, no break etc frames but they are all so boring!
The model you see on the pics was really THE ONE and man I can tell you… the compliments this little man gets he might just keep them forever! Seriously… all kind of people come over and tell him how cool he looks and that makes me sooo happy. This is what we wanted and we did it. He likes them, he likes that people notice them… and yes I do think he looks damn cool…

We will need to find a doctor here in Sweden now to follow things up.

In details:
*The first test, combined with a general check up, was End of March 2013.

*The second test was Beginning June. After he failed these two we were sent to see a specialist.

*Eye doctor appointment was just 2 weeks later on Tuesday 18.6. {I was so lucky because just before I walked in to make an appointment they have added an extra day to see kids, usually you would need to wait weeks/months}.

*He started to wear his patch the day after we saw the specialist.

*We then started to look around for glasses and had to wait a week for them to be ready. He started to wear them by the end of June.

*During our last week in Amsterdam {End July} we went back to the eye doctor. By then he had the patch for only 6 weeks and the glasses for 4 weeks.
The difference was amazing: His left eye made a big jump forwards {sight improved} and the squinting is much better. Patch time is down to 3h a day.

They are small and things can change very quickly, the eyes are still growing and developing.

I will update you once we saw a doc here and of course I am curious to see what

All kids are different but if you are in this situation make sure to make it fun and explain what is happening and why. When he failed the first test he was sad and I felt bad. I did not want him to feel sad. It is not his fault…

All further appointments we made sure that he was ok and that it was ok to “fail”.

Get your kid some cool glasses. They will wear them EVERY day and ALL day long!

Please ask me if you have any questions, very happy to hear thoughts, experiences… please share.
