Family Holiday on the Kent Coast

Family Holiday on the Kent Coast

This year we decided to vacation nationally and went to Kent. Not far from London at all, and therefore perfect for the current situation that can be somehow challenging for travelling families.

And here we stayed at the very charming 19th century Victorian cottage called The Wainstones Cottage. A place that rather found us than the other way around because the owner is my friend Sophie. A very talented multi-entrepreneur who is living in France and owns this cottage on the other side of the channel.
The cottage is located in the pretty seaside town of Hythe, just a stone’s throw from the main shopping street. Which made general errands like grocery shopping or take away very easy. And even the beach and canal were very close by.

More about Hythe

The coast is on our doorstep, you have easy access to explore the beautiful lush countryside and there are numerous castles to discover.
We were very lucky with the weather (you just don’t know when in the UK) and enjoyed the local beach profoundly. The best thing about it really is the promenade running behind it. I just love a great beach promenade and this one is kinda endless. Plus you will find some lovely cafes, restaurants, as well as little kiosks that did great with the new rules in place.

At the beach, you can choose between sunbathing, swimming, kayaking, kite surfing, and other water sports. The beach, as well as the water, were super clean and we all had a swim. Something, I have to be honest, I did not expect. But during the very hot days, I did go in completely and had a nice and refreshing swim.

But there is more than the beach

Hythe is the best place to access the Royal Military Canal. Stretching 28 miles from Seabrook almost to Hastings, it borders the Romney Marsh and was dug by hand in the early 1800s. A public path now runs its length so it can be enjoyed by walkers, cyclists, and anglers.

And when walking up to Sandwood behind the cottage we enjoyed a little forest as well as a huge playing field and spend some lovely afternoons here as well.

More about the cottage

The Wainstones Cottage is really well equipped and has everything you need for a comfortable family stay. There is a cosy sitting room, a separate dining space, and a small yet practical kitchen. Upstairs are two comfortable bedrooms that are beautifully decorated. Furthermore I love that Sophie chose some famous local Hythe and Folkestone artists to add colours, lovely prints, and other interior accessories. We thoroughly enjoyed the selection of family games that guests can use. Between jigsaw puzzles, classics, and games that we did not know and tried out after breakfast. It was good entertainment and very appreciated.

After all we had a very lovely time and were happy with our decision to stay in the UK. And even during the hot days, it was not too crowded at the beach, and one could always find a spot and keep distance to others.

In addition, the High Street is a great mix of antique shops, boutiques, and gift shops, intermingled with cafés, restaurants and convenience stores.

Would we recommend it?

In short: Absolutely. As mentioned, it is easy to reach from London as well as the Eurotunnel between Folkestone (UK) and Calais (FR) that is only a 10min drive from Hythe.  There is a lot to do with many beautiful beaches and lovely villages and cities along the Kent coast. A good start to explore are Sophie’s recommendations that she shares on the website. She has three children and is definitely a good source when it comes to entertaining the family in Hythe and surroundings.

Thank you, Sophie, for the lovely time we had and for making us discover this part of the UK.

Children workspaces that are perfect for home school and inspire imagination

Children work spaces that are perfect for home school and inspire imagination

Since we are far away from being done with Covid but summer breaks will eventually come to an end I thought it would be great to look a little more into workspaces for children.

Here in the UK, we are planning on sending children back to school in the 2nd week of September. Fingers crossed! However, I know that elsewhere schools will stay shut until next year. And that means doing the work from home and therefore a good space is needed.

Making a designated study space where kids feel comfortable, productive, and can concentrate is key and I will show you some great ideas, share some tips, and give you inspiration for your own four walls.

Welcome to this children workspaces that are perfect for home school and inspire imagination guide:

Creating a desk space

Having a special and comfortable space to study is crucial when you need to concentrate and to focus. And a dedicated desk is way better than working around the kitchen table. Plus this way you can keep all your pencils, erasers, and other school utensils on your desk – ready every time you continue to work. And I am sure your child will love to organise their own space.
Furthermore, a  great feature to have in a desk is adjustable height. Otherwise, you can also have an adjustable chair. That way the years of use are adding up.
I know that space can be an issue, so why not having a desk under a bunk bed or go for a small version with a drawer and the essentials can be kept in there.

I put together some great children’s desk to give you a head start:

kids' desks

1. Flexible desk*! The surface can be set to 3 different levels. I think it is great to be able to change up a little when you need it…

2. Cute desk* that comes in two sizes and a lots of colour options. Simple and cool!

3. Boho rattan desk*.

4. Perfectly combining design and functionality and the two compartments under the top can store everything. This desk* is available in white and celadon and has a groove for pencils on the top.

5. This desk* won the Red Dot Design Award and you can also add some drawers if you wish. (available in green and pink too)

6. Adjustable desk* with storage under the table and a great design. I love the natural version but there is blue and white as well.

7. Vintage style desk* that is available in different colours and has an accompanying chair* too.

8. This is a very stylish desk & chair set* that will look fantastic in any corner of your home.

Personalise the children workspace

Hang their artwork, add some time tables, and/or put a magnetic panel up to stick papers, notes, and drawings. Just make it fun, colourful, and inspiring. Have a look at my coolest art prints for kids’ rooms article to find great posters and more.
Colours are super important because they can turn a room into a great space and really help you to be creative. A room that screams happy and fun is so much better than a boring ‘classroom’ don’t you think?

Organisation

Think about your own desk or office. I am sure you are much more productive when it is clutter-free and tidy. And when you are creating a healthy learning environment for your kids it should be orderly as well.
Take a bookshelf and fill it with school books, paper, and art supplies. Provide little baskets for pens, glue sticks, scissors, etc. That way you will avoid a busy desk and leaving more space to do the work.

Don’t forget for the perfect children workspace:
You will need a bin, stock up on supplies, and keep healthy snacks in the pantry!

A monumental farmhouse turned into a modern family home

monumental farmhouse turned into a modern family home

Today I am taking you to The Netherlands. To the countryside and a very special property that I know you will adore as much as I do.

This monumental farmhouse was completely renovated and turned into a stunning family home. Including work areas, a huge backyard plus a large wooden outdoor residence.
It is a national monument, and yet meets all the requirements of the contemporary era. The entire construction of the house has taken place in close consultation with the National Monument Service. Note that the farm dates back to 1650 and was in a dilapidated state until 2012, only the outer walls and beams were still standing.

Therefore we will go straight to the good stuff and have a look. As you can guess from the first image – the kids rooms are amazing and that is where we will start the tour:

Girls room with lots of powder nuances…

The beams are definitely the T H I N G! They have such an impact, charm, and charisma. And I love how they are used to decorate the rooms.

And a little playroom in the lower ground that is just the perfect amount of space, toys, and fun.

Also loving all the little details and things that must have been inherited or found when strolling through markets and garage sales.

Now lets see the rest of the farmhouse:

What a space!

So much light, great big windows, and great wall features… take that striking wall of the various panel doors that the original house revealed and that have been placed against the rear facade for example.

The farmhouse is situated in s’Gravenmoer which is a lively little village in the center of The Netherlands. You can reach the cities of Breda, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Tilburg quickly and a 5-minute walk takes you to a beautiful nature reserve adjacent to ‘s Gravenmoer, where many hiking and cycling trails are located. It is kinda perfect…
